Speech pathology
Speech pathologists assess and treat disorders of communication in areas such as speech, voice, language and fluency.
Clients include children who fail to develop normal communication and people who acquire communication problems as a result of disease or injury such as stroke. A person’s ability to communicate may also be impaired because of disabilities such as hearing loss, brain damage, intellectual disability, stuttering, malfunction of the speech or respiratory organs, or emotional disturbances. In addition, speech pathologists work with clients who have feeding or swallowing problems.
To become a speech pathologist:

Undertake a Bachelor of Biomedicine or Science, or any degree with a major in Linguistics, Psychology or another relevant discipline.
Step 2
Choose the Master of Speech Pathology at Melbourne.

About the Master of Speech Pathology
The Master of Speech Pathology provides comprehensive training in all aspects of the profession. You will develop critical skills and learn about auditory and acoustic phonetics, anatomy and physiology, linguistics, speech and language disorders and clinical practice and processes, along with an introduction to research in the field.
Entry requirements
This program may have specific entry requirements such as prerequisite subjects or a minimum GPA (Grade Point Average) that must be completed to be considered for entry.
To apply for a Master of Speech Pathology, you must complete a bachelors degree in Biomedicine or Science. You may also complete any undergraduate degree with a major in linguistics, psychology or another relevant discipline.
Guaranteed entry
The University offers guaranteed entry into selected graduate degrees to domestic and international students who have completed an Australian Year 12 or the IB in Australia. Eligible students must enrol in a University of Melbourne undergraduate degree immediately following year 12, or be granted a deferral by the University. These guarantees are usually based on your ATAR/notional ATAR.
