Physiotherapy
Physiotherapists assess and treat a variety of conditions that affect people’s movement and physical function. They work in many areas, including private practice, major public and private hospitals, sports, community health, paediatrics and aged care.
Physiotherapists help their clients achieve the highest possible degree of physical activity, participation and quality of life, develop the knowledge and skills to formulate physiotherapeutic diagnoses, and design appropriate programs of prevention, treatment and exercise.
To become a physiotherapist:
Step 1
Choose the Bachelor of Biomedicine or Bachelor of Science at Melbourne and complete prerequisite subjects (one subject each) in human anatomy and human physiology.
Step 2
Choose the Doctor of Physiotherapy at Melbourne to qualify as a physiotherapist.
Alternative pathway
Alternatively, you can complete any undergraduate degree with completion of prerequisite subjects in human physiology and anatomy and then undertake the three-year Doctor of Physiotherapy.

About the Doctor of Physiotherapy
Melbourne’s Doctor of Physiotherapy is Australia’s first three-year entry to practise graduate masters level program in physiotherapy.
Building on prior learning at an undergraduate level, it provides students with a comprehensive, integrated course in the theory and practice of physiotherapy to assess, diagnose and treat disorders of human movement.
The degree is focused on the future needs of the physiotherapy profession – both locally and internationally – and was developed through extensive consultations with physiotherapists, students and leaders in the public and private health and research sectors.
Graduates will be prepared for the changing roles of the physiotherapist in areas such as chronic disease management, health promotion and prevention, emergency medicine, acute care and private practice.
Entry requirements
This program may have specific entry requirements such as prerequisite subjects, a minimum GPA (Grade Point Average) or an interview that must be completed to be considered for entry.
Guaranteed entry
The University offers guaranteed entry into selected graduate degrees to domestic and international students who have completed an Australian Year 12 or the IB in Australia. Eligible students must enrol in a University of Melbourne undergraduate degree immediately following year 12, or be granted a deferral by the University. These guarantees are usually based on your ATAR/notional ATAR.
