Social work is a profession committed to developing the full potential of individuals, groups and communities. As a social worker, you will work with disadvantaged clients to overcome either personal or structural barriers which create and maintain distress, injustice and inequality. This is a rewarding career choice if you are motivated to make a difference to those around you and enjoy helping others.

To become a social worker:

Step 1
Undertake an undergraduate degree with a social sciences focus.

Step 2
Choose the Master of Social Work at Melbourne.

About the Master of Social Work
The Master of Social Work prepares you for professional practice in a diverse range of social work contexts. It provides you with a nationally and internationally benchmarked course of study in the theory and practice of social work.

Graduates have excellent employment prospects in a wide range of government and community service settings. You can work with people in a variety of ways including group work, community work, individual and family counselling and casework, program planning, policy and development, and advocacy. Graduates will be eligible to apply for membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW).

 

 

Entry requirements
This program may have specific entry requirements such as work experience that must be completed to be considered for entry.

Guaranteed entry
The University offers guaranteed entry into selected graduate degrees to domestic and international students who have completed an Australian Year 12 or the IB in Australia. Eligible students must enrol in a University of Melbourne undergraduate degree immediately following year 12, or be granted a deferral by the University. These guarantees are usually based on your ATAR/notional ATAR.
